Tar Heels bounce back

(by robbi pickeral, organization writer) chapel hill well, that’s more like it.

three days after losing its no. 1 ranking, its first game of the salt and its chance to go undefeated, no. 3 north carolina bounced following wednesday with a 108-70 blowout of college of charleston at the smith center.

the tar heels’ defense wasn’t seamless, what with the cougars shooting 46.9 percent in the first half and one of unc’s best stoppers, marcus ginyard, sitting on the bench after the unimpaired scheme.

but carolina jigger much better from the field (59 percent) and the free throw line (19-on the side of-22) becoming the first opponent to score 100 or more points against the cougars since 1977, a period of 951 games, and the second-longest hurry in the nation.

plus, there was no questioning the tar heels’ aggressiveness, something they believe cost them dearly during their downfall to boston college on sunday night.

considering charleston led by as many as three points first, then kept its loss within reason for most of the first half by burying eight three-pointers, it wasn’t exactly the original-game rustle- to the ground unc fans might have expected.

but carolina (14-1), which made 59.5 percent of its shots in the from the start full stop, pulled away with an 8-2 run including a ty lawson layup at the horn to take a 53-41 lead into halftime.

then it began the subordinate period with an 11-0 run that the cougars (10-3) could at no time combine.

aplomb nub guard larry drew ii’s layup with 3:51 left marked the first delay since dec. 6, 1977 that the cougars allowed an opponent to score in triple digits.

it was not immediately clear why ginyard who returned last month after having foot surgery in october, played in the previous three games, but has been backward to return to 100 percent was in uniform but did not play. the senior went through pre-games warms-ups, then sat on the bench wearing a sleeve on his right leg to protect a lingering knee bruise.

forward tyler hansbrough led the team with 24 points and seven rebounds. deon thompson and lawson chipped in 15 points apiece.

another good brand was the play of starting shooting wayne ellington, who went 3-for-5 with a view 10 points.

the junior sharpshooter had made only 29 of his 79 shot attempts in seven aforementioned home game this season, a perplexing stat looking at he > has shot 36-championing-69 on the carriageway this season.

USC’s Mark Sanchez mulls NFL options

Will he stay or will he go now?

Mark Sanchez certainly helped his case for the NFL draft last week, completing a whopping 28 of 35 for 413 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions against a solid Penn State defense in the Rose Bowl. He ran for a score too. Afterward, Sanchez and Pete Carroll spoke with reporters about the quarterback’s future:

Colony club new york

Carroll has repeatedly said that this can’t be an emotional decision. If it’s strictly on the numbers, ESPN’s Todd McShay provides a pretty compelling reason for him to go. Here’s his updated list of the top five NFL-ready quarterbacks:

If Sanchez returns, USC will have 10 starters back on offense (important because they could lose all 11 on defense) and will transition into a strong offensive team instead of a strong defensive team. His leadership makes him uniquely important to the Trojans. For fans, his heart-on-his-sleeve style is always fun to watch.

Over the last two seasons, Sanchez always seemed to be laughing, grinning or yelling his lungs out. “He’s a goofy kid!” said wide receiver Damian Williams. “But we need that. You’ve got to have that enthusiasm out there.”

So we ask …

Cloud Computing: The Clouds Are Coming

the last talk by alan williamson was the most interesting for me. his main message was that with cloud infrastructures problems don’t magically go away, they just take care of. you don’t have scalability or storage problems any more, but you need constantly monitor the cloud and your application in it. alan pointed out examples when amazon’s cloud failed and their applications got cut off from the internet. as a solution, he proposed deploying the attention on more than one cloud so that you have resilience.

KU cornerback Thornton will miss Insight Bowl

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Kansas cornerback Justin Thornton did not make the trip to Arizona due to disciplinary reasons and will not play in Wednesday’s Insight Bowl game against Minnesota.

“We talked to him before we left,” KU linebacker James Holt said. “You know, he understood. He’s just got to straighten up a little bit and come back his senior year and show that he’s a leader.”

The reason for Thornton’s suspension is unknown. Thornton, a native of St. Joseph, started the season at free safety and moved to cornerback before the Texas Tech game on Oct. 25. He had 63 tackles, one interception and 11 pass break-ups.

Holt said that senior Kendrick Harper would start in Thornton’s place. Harper lost his starting spot earlier this season to allow Thornton and Daymond Patterson to start at cornerback.

“(Harper’s) been playing in the spot and he’s been doing very well,” Holt said. “He’s about 100 percent. He has his opportunity and he’s taking advantage of it.”

Mumbai Terrorist Attack: Sexual Torture Of Victims Confirmed

taj mahal in mumbai under begin

DBKP has discussed before the obsession of Muslims sexually torturing and mutilating their helpless victims.

This sexually repressed, misogynistic religion preaches hatred, rape, and plunder of nonadherents, a class increasingly identified as “religiously sane”. It was therefore no surprise that India has finally confirmed the nature of the horrific tortures the Jewish and white victims were subjected.

The victims were first humiliated, then sexually mutilated in front of the other victims, then shot. While information is only slowly being released, it is strongly hinted that the men were castrated and the women impaled. The worse sufferors were the Jewish victims, and so the only photos being released are censored images from the Taj Mahal Hotel.

As stated in the Mumbai Mirror, who broke this story:

“Disturbing photographs made available to this newspapers by police sources indicate that several of the guests at the Taj Mahal Hotel during the siege November 26 were sexually humiliated by the terrorists and then shot dead.

Police sources confirm that even as the terrorists were engaged in a fierce combat with NSG commandos, they were humiliating their hostages before ending their terrifying ordeal.

Foreign guests were their particular target. Eight of the 31 killed at the Taj were foreign nationals. … “Even the Rabbi and his wife at Nariman House were sexually assaulted and their genitalia mutilated,” said a senior officer of the investigating team, not wishing to be quoted.”

The Western Press has continually whitewashed the true face of Islam with childish platitudes. I wonder if they are only playing into the hands of these terrorists who keep trying to shock the world but cannot get past the smug self-censorship of the MainStream Media.

UPDATE: Here is a link to one of the photos released by the India Times. Warning the image is graphic. [Link] Source: Mumbai Mirror Image - Taj Mahal Hotel, Mumbai India

NBA Upcoming Free Agents: How Do They Compare To Last Year’s Class?

Although there were big names a plenty, last year’s crop of NBA free agents fell into a pattern of underachieving, as most players have played worse than in previous seasons with previous teams.

So how does next season’s crop of free agents fall in comparison to last season?

2009 still offers big names, but most of the players available are role players.

Among the big names, Mike Bibby (Atlanta Hawks), Jason Kidd (Dallas Mavericks), Allen Iverson (Detroit Pistons), Rasheed Wallace (Detroit Pistons), Ron Artest (Houston Rockets), Stephon Marbury (New York Knicks), and Carlos Boozer (Utah Jazz).

The bulk of players heading into free agency in 2009, are guys that will come in, fill roles, and play reliably for a smaller salary.

Ben Gordon (Chicago Bulls), Drew Gooden (Chicago Bulls), Ronald Murray (Atlanta Hawks), Brandon Bass (Dallas Mavericks), Antonio McDyess (Detroit Pistons), Rasho Nesterovic (Indiana Pacers), and Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Lakers) just to name a few.

2009 seems like a year that will offer movement, and teams will either reach greatness or fall from it depending on how they handle expiring contracts.

While teams like the Knicks seem ready to juggle contracts in hopes of landing the big prize in 2010, other teams will need to re-sign many players to stay competitive.

Both the Atlanta Hawks (Bibby, Murray and Zaza Pechulia have expiring contracts) and Detroit Pistons (risk losing Iverson, Wallace and McDyess this off-season) both need to work hard to remain competitive through next season.

Carlos Boozer has already said that he will be leaving the Jazz this offseason, and will likely be hounded by teams looking for a presence inside, teams like the Chicago Bulls should be interested.

Players like Mike Bibby and Jason Kidd are both above 30, but they still have a lot to offer. They bring leadership and the ability to put the ball in the right place at the right time.

The Los Angeles Lakers should be in the market for a point guard like Bibby or Kidd, a player who won’t necessarily score a lot but will get it to the person that will. The extra veteran presence would also be good to help bring along a younger player like Jordan Farmar.

Allen Iverson is a guard who plays completely different from both Kidd and Bibby (to state the obvious) and he would be a better fit for a team that needs a consistent scorer to get into contention.

The Phoenix Suns would be the perfect fit for Phoenix Suns, with Shaq and Amare Stoudemire controlling the paint and Steve Nash making every pass necessary, Iverson would be able to flourish in an environment that would give him open looks constantly.

He would also be a strong pick up for the Utah Jazz, who have a great point guard in Deron Williams as well as an inside presence in Mehmet Okur and Andre Kirilenko. It seems like they will lose Boozer and adding a scorer to the mix would be a good idea to keep the Jazz in contention.

Stephon Marbury is a special player in the sense that he needs somebody who will put him in his place to make sure that he never acts out again. Where he lands will highly depend on how his ego is affected by this season’s rendezvous with the Knicks.

If he realizes that he needs to shut up and prove himself to get the big money again, he should be able to find a home with one of the teams mentioned above for Iverson, but if he still thinks he is top dog, it will be hard for him to find a place that would pay him the amount of money he would likely want.

The only team that would take that would overpay a player that much would be the Knicks, but he already blew that one.

Ny jets

Ron Artest is an interesting player because his contract is up, but he is still 29 years-old and if he is able to keep his act clean throughout this season and the Rockets play well, I have a hard time imagining that he would be anywhere but Houston next season.

The most interesting thing to watch this off-season, however, will be where the roll players end up.

Lamar Odom is likely in the same boat as Artest, only he doesn’t need to prove himself as somebody who isn’t a cancer, but Kobe has liked having him there and he has been a big part of the Lakers.

Ben Gordon is very likely to be leaving the Chicago Bulls after this season, which is what he wanted to do last off-season before he realized that there was no market for him.

If he will drop his high contract demands this off-season, he could end up in a place like New Orleans where he would likely take most of the playing time instead of the average duo of Rasual Butler and Morris Peterson. Having Chris Paul to pass to him might make him live up to his full potential, especially after seeing what a rookie can do to his game. The 76ers are another possible destination.

Obama Takes In a Show and a Shave Ice

by philip rucker waimanalo, hawaii — president-elect barack obama interrupted what has been a lone hawaiian vacation today by taking his daughters and a caravan of family friends to a oceanic amusement park and to a mobbed shopping center. in venturing out as a hawaiian voyager, obama ditched his “press pool” of reporters, photographers and cameramen, breaching the long-repute protocol requiring that presidents or presidents-elect travel at all times with at least some journalists. instead, with only his secret service detail in tow, obama, his daughters and friends spent about an hour here at the sea way of life park, irresistible in a dolphin show. on the way back to his kailua vacation home, the president-elect stopped at the bustling koko marina center in compensation a bite (coincidentally allowing the pool to catch up with him). “so, what are we going to get?” obama asked at the counter of koko marina New Jerusalem deli.
