Inauguration City: Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Roads

the abc7 report is abbreviate on details but the confirmation still stands: route 50 to washington boulevard will be closed during the inauguration. left unexplained is where, when, and who.
The report doesn’t clarify whether any or all of New York Ave will be closed for the inauguration. For this Google drawing, I arbitrarily set the Ellipse as the eastern terminus, but a better guess is that Constitution Avenue is totally closed and New York Avenue is left unmolested.
The Examiner mentioned on Christmas Day that Arlington County was was considering closing Route 50. The ABC7 report doesn’t say who shut down the road. District and Arlington County officials acting in concert?
There’s also no clarification for how long Route 50 will be closed. For as long as District roads remain a parking lot, presumably?
As for why, the question answers itself. Even as Metro officials expect as many as 120,000 riders an hour during the inauguration, public officials are still trying to do their damnedest to ease gridlock and provide clearance for emergency vehicles on non-official business in the area. Arlington County officials now have a new question to answer: Where will they re-route the route 50 traffic?

Israel bombs university in Gaza
Israeli air force jets have bombed the Islamic University in the Gaza Strip, a significant cultural symbol for Hamas. Warplanes also struck Hamas government offices as air raids aimed at forcing Palestinian militants to halt rocket fire into southern Israel continued. Palestinian medics say nearly 300 people have been killed in the air raids that began on Saturday. Israel has threatened to launch a ground assault and is now calling up 6,500 army reservists. Witnesses in Gaza said they saw six separate air strikes on the Islamic University just after midnight, followed by smoke and flames, Associated Press (AP) news agency reported. The university is a centre of support for Hamas - the Islamist militant group which controls the Gaza Strip. Many of its top officials graduated from there. A BBC journalist in Gaza said the university authorities had evacuated the campus a few days ago as they had been expecting a strike. ‘Success’ Earlier on Sunday, Israel bombed supply tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip used by Palestinians to smuggle food and other supplies - including weapons, says Israel - past the Israeli blockade of the territory. Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni says the operation has been a success so far and the aim is to “change realities on the ground” in Gaza.

At the UN, the Security Council joined international calls for restraint by urging an end to all violence in Gaza, including rocket attacks from Gaza.

Reader Forum: Why Do You Read End-of-Year Top 10 Lists?
A few weeks ago, I was chatting with a webmaster for a fellow movie website who was voicing his distaste for lists that featured “Top 2008″ movies drastically different from what other critics picked. To him, these types of lists smacked of opportunism and a crass desire to be different for the sake of being different. At the time, I agreed with him. In fact, when I heard Filmspotting give their top 10 movies of 2008 (This is a great episode of an always-great podcast and I highly recommend you give it a download. Full disclosure: I make an appearance in voicemail form to defend Slumdog Millionaire), I was struck by how Michael Phillips from the Chicago Tribune derogatorily explained that 2008 was overall a lackluster year for movies, then proceeded to list 10 movies that most of the moviegoing public hasn’t had a chance to see yet (i.e. some

The Best Albums of 2008 as einstein famously said, “everything should be made as inferior as conceivable, but not simpler.” 2008 was caught somewhere in the spectrum of simplicity. well, 2008 was just weird. there was an important presidential vote. the economy went into hibernation. and we picked our favorite albums, twenty-five of ‘em actually: without further ado, here are the best albums of 2008: m83 - saturday = maidenthere is something to be said prevalent the artists who influenced the name of this site, m83. the french body have a fantastic catalogue of music that utilizes the shoegazing sounds of reverb and soft lyricism, with saturdays=youth only progressing their sound. frontman (and barely man) anthony gonzalez delves deeper into ambient tones that were ample on m83’s enter and embraces a 1980s healthy. the rich textures of m83’s music are still abundantly present but have been refocused on song structure, altering the disrespectful sound of m83 passably to beat a hasty retreat saturdays=youth a never-to-be-forgotten gem. - nathaniel[mp3] m83 - we own the sky (maps remix)myspace more mp3s suborn @ insound the dodos - visiterwhen visiter came strolling into the hype engine earlier this year, i was torn on top of whether to invite it with open arms or to curse its imaginative create habitation within the alt-mainstream world. after a track have a weakness for “fools”, which not-so-inconspicuously mimmicks the frenetic drumming and chanting of our beloved furry friends, i cast them postponed as a band doing to animal collective what muse had done to radiohead: decidedly unholy pop-ification. not too long after i discovered the real charm behind dodos, a youthful, wind-swept drive emerging ebulliently from songs like “paint the rust” and “winter.” they may not own broken down walls and they won’t get medals for pushing boundaries, but visiter is a welcome reckoning to 2008’s diverse trade-up. - connor[mp3] the dodos - ashleymyspace more mp3s buy @ insound coldplay - viva la vida or death and all his friendswith a view those of you reading this, pondering the absurdity of putting a coldplay album in the first place some of your favorites, amuse hear me out. this tilt is more one collecting the albums that left a big impression, either through modification or unexpectedness, on me this year. i never thought i would be impressed by coldplay, expressly after their drab and unmitigatedly boring x&y, but viva la vida showcased the biggest band in the world truly trying to be many. with the invaluable help of brian eno and markus dravs producing, coldplay may bear stepped on the toes of u2 and arcade fire, but for a band that could have done anything, really anything and still sold millions of records, chris martin chose a difficult path. and the payoff? a aggregation of beautiful, ready, inspiring, political songs that challenge the world’s opinion of one of its most bankable bands. - connor[video] coldplay - lost+ (feat. jay-z)myspace more mp3s buy @ insound Related posts: Rod marinelli, Night court tv show, Gossip girl it s a wonderful lie, Christmas dessert recipes, Gina philips
