2010 Cadillac SRX - Auto Shows

Keep the badge, change everything else. They mean it when they call this SRX all-new.

Movies on demand.tv

BY DAVID GLUCKMAN

We’ve been fans of Cadillac’s SRX crossover since it went on sale in 2004, naming it to our 5Best Trucks list for three years straight. A new SRX is being unveiled at the 2009 Detroit auto show, though only the badge will continue on with most everything else changing around it.

For starters, things have been turned around with standard drive wheels in front instead of the rear?all-wheel drive continues as an option, gaining the ability to apportion torque side-to-side in the rear via an electronic limited-slip differential. The SRX has also been downsized (or is that rightsized?) for these changing times and the available engines have likewise shrunk. Compared to the current model, the SRX is smaller in length and wheelbase, but wider by about two and a half inches. Underpinnings are now shared with GM’s other mid-size crossovers, including the Saturn Vue and recently redone Chevrolet Equinox.

No More V-8

Two engines will be offered in the 2010 SRX, both of which are smaller than the current base SRX engine, a 3.6-liter V-6. The standard motor will be GM’s new direct-injection 3.0-liter V-6, which puts out 260 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque and bests the output of the previous standard mill. Offered as an option will be a 2.8-liter turbocharged V-6 that produces 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and nearly matches the 320 hp and 315 lb-ft afforded by the 4.6-liter Northstar V-8 in current SRXs. The turbo six, plucked from the Saab 9-3, is notable as the first turbocharged engine offered in any North American Cadillac. Six-speed automatic transmissions with manual shift control are paired to both engines, regardless of front- or all-wheel-drive layout.

A Look Back: Revisiting some of our favorite feature photos from 2008

In compiling our top five photos of the year, we considered several criteria in the process. Overall punch, great angles, drama, and irony, among others.

Using those criteria, we soon discovered several Times photos were contenders for the top five spread. As such, we had to expand our concept a bit and placed our second string of favorite photos in smaller form on the front page of the paper.

We hope you enjoy these photos as much as we enjoyed capturing them.

Capturing Cosplay: The Photographs of Brian Berman (Part Two)

Editor’s note: this is my last post for 2008. I will be back after the start of the new year.

Last time, I shared with you a series of photographs of Furry fans taken by Brian Berman and encouraged us to reflect a bit on what they show or fail to show us about this particular subcultural community. To me, these photographs speak to a core issue in fan studies: the question of how we position ourselves vis-a-vis the subjects of our research. Put in its broadest terms, we see different things and say different things if we are writing about a community which we are a member of than when we are dealing with that same community as an outsider.

Brian is very explicit in his artistic statement and in his bio that while he is fascinated by these fan communities, he looks at them as an outsider, a non-participant. This does not mean that his photographs are necessarily hostile to the communities being depicted, but they do, to some degree, hold these fans at a distance. This is the strength of the images in many ways, but it is also what may make them more than a little disturbing to some of us who claim a much closer set of social and emotional ties to fan communities.

By way of contrast, I thought we might look at some of the videos we’ve been producing about Cosplay for Project New Media Literacies’s learning library project. These videos, filmed at an anime convention in Ohio, reflect a perspective much more sympathetic to the fan experience. Indeed, many of the students who worked with us on these videos were themselves anime fans and some of them had a long history of cosplay. Our goal was precisely to escape the outsider perspective of many commercial documentaries about fans, to treat cosplay as a normal and valued mode of cultural expression, and to hopefully introduce these practices to young people who may not have found their way into the cosplay community before.

These photographs were taken by Brian Berman at Onnafest, Newark Gateway Hilton, Newark, NJ 2005.

After graduating from both the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and the School of Visual Arts in NYC he started shooting professionally in New York in 1996. He shoots for, and has been featured in, publications such as the New York Times, Esquire, Ojo de Pez, and Capricious Magazine. He has also been featured in shows at the Houston Photo Festival and Wallspace Gallery. The project featured here is part of larger project about how people fulfill a basic human need to fit in by creating their own subcultures. He does not watch anime or own a fursuit.

Israel Strikes Hamas in Gaza

BY TAYLOR MARSH –updated–

hamas press conference on the incident.

It really could have only ended this way after the Egypt brokered peace exploded recently. Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was in Egypt on Christmas Day, warning President Hosni Mubarak that Israel wasn’t going to allow Hamas’ continuous attacks inside Israel without a response.

This story was in the TM headlines all day yesterday. Just call it foreshadowing of today’s events.

The AP reports Israel stuck Hamas targets after weeks of rocket and mortar fire into Israel from Hamas:

I actually heard the MSNBC host Alex Witt ask about the possibility of a peace agreement before Bush leaves office. It was surreal. Nobody has done less in the last two decades than the Bush administration to make the Middle East more unstable. That anyone could offer with a straight face any possibility of peace at this point shows the lack of rational deduction utilized when speaking of the Israeli - Palestinian reality we face.

The problem Israel faces is that international public opinion is against them, especially after the blocking of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians. The reality of national self defense is lost on Israeli critics right now, because of what is seen as heavy handedness over the aid issue. Israel is losing the public relations war, even as it fights to protect its own citizens, something that is the first priority of any country’s leaders.

Israel war

Barack Obama certainly has his hands full when he comes in to office. That’s the real legacy George W. Bush leaves the new president. Is the world any safer after Bush-Cheney? is the real question that should be asked. The answer is obvious.

State Lottery Ticket Sales Down — GOOD.

Many states in the United States depend on gambling, specifically lottery ticket sales, to fund their school systems and other agencies. I have always been against this practice. But you know the ploy, politicians say “It’s for the c-h-i-l-d-r-e-n…..” So we must allow gambling. The truth is gambling in all forms harms children and families and if we cannot educate our children without depending on gambling, then it truly is a sad day for this country. We’ve all heard of the addict taking the last few dollars a family has for food and shelter, and spending it on their addiction … gambling, alcohol, drugs, whatever.

Lotteryballs

the sour economy is topping the inseparable source of supervision financing that had been widely regarded as recession-proof: lotteries.across the u.s., many phase lotteries are reporting hefty declines, with ticket sales down nearly 10% in california and more than 4% in texas over the past few months. in good years, these lotteries have turned over more than $1 billion apiece to education programs, the most unrefined lottery beneficiaries.

Lottery officials have long praised their games as low-cost entertainment that grow even more appealing to players when the economy turns down. But lottery sales nationwide fell about $215 million, or nearly 2%, from July through September compared with the same stretch in 2007, according to La Fleur’s magazine, which tracks the lottery business.

Georgia aquarium

The decline in lottery sales “is an unusual phenomenon,” said John W. Kindt, a gambling critic and business professor at the University of Illinois. A big proportion of lottery tickets are bought by people with gambling problems who are likely to play more in bad economic times, he said, even as intermittent players cut back. (WSJ)

Blacks contribute heavily to lottery sales

When it comes to the Illinois Lottery, it is true that you have to play to win. Unfortunately, it seems that Illinois’ Black residents are doing most of the playing but not a lot of the winning.

A Defender analysis of Illinois Lottery sales for fiscal year 2008 revealed that six out of the top 10 ZIP codes that produced the highest sales have a majority Black population: 60619, 60628, 60617, 60651, 60609 and 60636.

But the analysis shows that when it came to cashing in on winnings, players living in these same six ZIP codes did not fare well. (more)

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — Youssif stands on stage beaming as he belts out "Jingle Bell Rock," his tiny burned hands waving in sync with his classmates at Hamlin Street School.

His mother, Zaineb, stands at the back, cradling his little sister, Aya, tears rolling down her face. "I am so proud of him," she says. "It reminds me of what he was like in Iraq when he used to sing in kindergarten. I felt for a moment that none of this had happened. My son was back, without fear, strong."

Youssif spots us, and waves wildly. Little appears to remain of the sullen and withdrawn dark-eyed boy we first met in Baghdad more than a year ago.

Catherine the great horse

It has been almost two years since masked men in Baghdad doused Youssif, then just 4 years old, in gasoline and set him on fire. His mother still doesn’t sleep at night.

"I still blame myself. I should have protected him. Sometimes I say to myself that I wish it had happened to me, just not to him." Zaineb says, her voice starting to quiver. "If only I hadn’t let him go out to play that day."

Today Youssif plays freely, without fear.

"Let’s race" he shouts to his friend Brandon as the two boys dash across the schoolyard. A couple of minutes later the two are playfully jostling over a rubber ball. Youssif shrieks and bursts into laughter as the two play catch.

"It’s like this weight has been lifted off of me, off of him," his father, Wissam, says. "It’s like we’ve left this dark, depressing state where we were consumed by Youssif and the attack that had happened. You know, it’s so hard to see a child, my child, go through something like this. When I see him like this, I feel like he’s coming back."

Don’t Miss

After CNN and CNN.com first reported Youssif’s story in 2007, more than 12,000 CNN.com users contributed to a fund set up by the Children’s Burn Foundation of Sherman Oaks California, enabling the boy and his family to travel to the United States for treatment.

Youssif has undergone more than a dozen achat de viagra en ligne surgeries. Much of the thick scar tissue around his eyes, mouth and nose — left by his treatment in Baghdad — has been removed. He currently has yet another tissue expander in his left cheek, intended to stretch out "good skin" to be used to replace his scar tissue.

Youssif has grown used to the sometimes painful treatments. "When I started this process of tissue expansion, I would have to chase him around the room," Dr. Peter Grossman, Youssif’s surgeon, tells us as he injects achat cialis more liquid into the expander. "We’d need three people to hold him down for these injections."

Youssif will probably have many more surgeries stretched out over time. "The problem we have with Youssif is that every operation we do tends to heal well after surgery, but then a month after, he starts to form these really thick scars," Grossman said. "It’s probably best at this time to let his body relax, let these scars mature over a period of a year or two years."

Today, Youssif grimaces in pain but braves it alone, refusing to take his father’s hand.

"Seven or eight times put water," Youssif says back at home, explaining how the tissue expansion works. "I am not scared. It goes here," he says pointing to the scarring over his lip.

He’s not all that interested in talking about medical procedures.

"When I sharpen this it broke," he says, trotting over with his new pencils. We all smile.
