It’s-A Getting Worse: China Stops Lending to U.S. Banks

Reuters says:

Chinese regulators have told domestic banks to stop interbank lending to U.S. financial institutions to prevent possible losses during the financial crisis, the South China Morning Post reported on Thursday.

The Hong Kong newspaper cited unidentified industry sources as saying the instruction from the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) applied to interbank lending of all currencies to U.S. banks but not to banks from other countries.

as lawmakers were scrambling to crunch numbers related to the economy over the weekend, the presidential candidates were briefing with fiscal numbers of another type–midnight on saturday was the deadline for the presidential hopefuls to report their august fundraising totals. barack obama reported a record $64.6 million, while john mccain raised his own personal best at $55.9 million (including money to his compliance committee, established to lend a hand him navigate the public financing system). in total, obama has raised $454 million to mccain’s $230 million. because mccain opted into the public finance arrangement, august was the last month he could raise private funds. he entered september with $36.4 million in the bank. he also all in nearly all that he had raised for the month, at $52.3 million. because of public funding, he’ll now have a spending cap of $84 million. obama started september with $77.4 million on hand after spending $53.1 million in august. the center for responsive statesmanship is analyzing the candidates’ august reports and will update opensecrets.org’s presidential data by toil, sector, geography and demographics beginning oct. 1 or soon after. congressional reports are not proper until oct. 15, covering the 3rd chambers.

Rays-Red Sox: Two-Game Lead and Win Go to the Rays

It was a game the Boston Red Sox needed to win, but the pitching and offense never showed up when they needed it.

The game would have placed the Red Sox back atop the AL East with the Rays, but after an atrocious game played by Boston, the Tampa Bay Rays now stand alone in the AL East, leading by two games.

The 10-3 win for the Rays gave them the regular season series victory 10-8. If somehow the division is tied at the end of the season, the Rays will be crowned the AL east champions as long as the Wild Card belongs to either team.

What was going to be a season-changing win for the Red Sox turned into a division-ending game. There is now ten games to play and it is very unlikely that they will come back and take control of the division.

Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield only lasted two-and-one-thirds innings. The early exit was suprising due to his previous success in domes and his last start, which was his best of the season. He allowed six runs on six hits and got the loss.

The winning pitcher for the Rays was Grant Balfour who entered the game in relief of starter Matt Garza with two outs in the fifth inning.

Both teams will most likely be in the playoffs but now the Red Sox will have to face the LA Angels who they were only able to beat once this season in nine meetings.

What was supposed to be a game that put the Red Sox back on top in the standings became a disastrous one-sided game that put a damper on the Boston’s World Series hopes.

What Brought Kanye West Back To The VMAs?

It’s not easy to cap a night featuring powerhouse performances from Lil Wayne, T.I., Kid Rock and more. So when VMA producers wanted to turn their moment into something truly monumental, they knew who to call to close the show: Mr. Kanye West.

“He’s one of the most pre-eminent hip-hop performers of his time,” said Dave Sirulnick, executive producer of the VMAs. “He makes sure that not only the people in the front row are into his show, but the people in the last row are feeling it as well. Everybody is feeling it the same. He gives that kind of energy. He gives that kind of intensity.”

If awards shows are intended to be the introduction to what’s big and the culmination of everything fly and huge of the past year, it’s tough to argue that West didn’t deserve to be a major player in the 25th VMAs. He was tapped as the MTV News Brain Trust’s Hottest MC in the Game, and his Grammy-nominated third LP, Graduation, was one of the biggest sellers of 2007. Kanye’s Glow in the Dark Tour was not just a highlight of 2008, it was a milestone of his career, proving he can outperform just about anyone in any genre.

“We thought, ‘Let’s see if he wants to take this opportunity,’ ” Sirulnick said.

But while Kanye was clearly the man for the job, it wasn’t always clear if he was willing to take it on. His blowup after last year’s VMAs quickly became the stuff of YouTube legend. Obviously, tempers have since settled down, and his relationship with MTV is back on track. ‘Ye even worked with MTV News to honor young veterans in the “Choose or Lose & Kanye West Present: Homecoming” special.

“We know last year — in hindsight — he wanted to close the show. So we thought, ‘Let’s give him a call and see if he’s interested in doing it,’ ” Sirulnick explained. “He said, ‘Yeah, I am.’ We sat and talked. We spent some time together.”

And so, a larger-than-life, showstopping VMA performance was born, the perfect way for Kanye to premiere a new track.

“The guy’s got one of the most successful tours of the year,” Sirulnick said. “He has one of the most artistic tours of the year. He always brings it. He brings the intensity. He brings a great performance.”
