Flash CS4: Motions Preset panel (Part 1)

While there are many new outstanding features in Flash CS4 that are cool and flashy (e.g. Object-based animation model, 3D transformations, Inverse kinematics with the Bones tool, Adobe Media Encoder with H.264 support, and much more) don’t overlook a very simple feature that will save you a significant amount of time during the animation process: the Motion Presets panel.

The Motion Presets panel allows you to save as a preset your animation and apply it to an object on the Stage. Additionally, we’ve provided a library of prebuilt animations that you can preview before applying.

You can easily define a motion preset by simply right-clicking on any object that has a tween applied to it, and choose Save As Motion Preset. To use a motion preset, simply select any symbol on the stage, choose a preset from the Motion Presets panel, and click Apply.

I like to create complex Flash animations that involve numerous layers and staggered timelines. Having the ability in Flash CS4 to quickly apply a motion preset to multiple layers increases my productivity significantly.

Here are the steps I use when applying a motion preset to multiple layers:

Step One: Select the layer that has the motion that you’d like to create a preset from (View image) and from the Motion Presets panel (Window>Motion Presets) click the Save selection as preset icon (View image). Name your preset.

Step Two: Select the layers that you’d like to apply a preset to (View image) (Shift-Click to select a range of layers, Control/Command-click to cherry-pick a non-contiguous selection of layers). Select the preset and click the Apply button (View image).

Here’s what the final step should look like: (View image).

Next week I’ll discuss distributing motion presets and creating a preview for a custom preset.

Cheers! Rick Miller

Obama Mama dreams of inauguration

1 I just read Alma’s breathless post about being at Grant Park for Obama’s moment of glory last Tuesday. Lucky lucky Alma! I’m green. Oh, how I wished I was there! The energy must have been electric: what a moment in history.

But it’s no time to get buried in regrets, last Tuesday was …in the immortal words of my favorite Scottish comedian Craig Ferguson: a great day for America. For the first time in years, I feel really positive about the direction this country is headed. What an incredible young leader: smart, articulate, thoughtful… and handsome. When I saw Michelle, Malia and Sasha take the stage, I got the chills…it finally began to sink in that this was REAL. A new beginning for the US.

Now, I’m more energized than ever to get the family over to Washington for the Inauguration on January 20th and late last night I fired an email off to my US Representive, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren It’s a really long shot. Zoe doesn’t even know how many tickets she’ll get and I bet she’ll be inundated by like minded folks who want to witness history with their young kids by their side and soak up the energy, the optimism and spirit of this incredible man: Barack Obama. But hey: nothing ventured….

If you’re exploring the possibility yourself, this website has all the info you need.

Sun

I contacted my DC-expert friend (DCEF) last night too and he gave me the low down…(it’s not so rosy…!)

And I quote: “They’re talking about a million people coming to DC. The first question is do you have anyone to stay with? Hotel accommodations will not only be scarce, they’re going to gouge people big time.”

Oh great.

But on the plus side DCEF said of Clinton’s first inauguration (when he talked about America’s renewal): “It just feels profound. And of course this will be profound and historic and possibly very memorable. The mood will be tremendous and exciting.” Well I’m willing to tap into my savings for something profound and exciting. Our kids’ 529 college funds maybe sinking faster than we ever anticipated, but attending this incredible inauguration will be something that the market can’t destroy?it will stay with them forever.

And as for this Obama Mama? She’s almost breathless at the thought of it.

P.S. For anyone with Michelle Obama’s ear: on your dog dilemma. Get yourselves a cuddly Wheaten Terrier Poodle Mix like ours from your nearest shelter: hypo allergenic, sweet natured and almost free. Yes, he’s a mutt, but a marvelous mutt.

Obama holds first newser as president-elect

From NBC/NJ’s Athena JonesCHICAGO — In his first press conference as president-elect, Obama talked about the enormity of dealing with the financial crisis facing the country and the importance of a bipartisan approach to it, repeated his call for passage of an economic stimulus package and said he would be careful in choosing the members of his Cabinet.

Notably, he did not respond directly to a question about whether he would still seek the tax increases for the wealthiest Americans that he proposed on the campaign trail and whether they would go into effect in 2009.

The roughly 20-minute press conference began with a prepared statement about the new jobs numbers. Obama noted that 240,000 jobs had been lost in October, marking the 10th consecutive month of job losses that have left 10 million Americans unemployed.

Obama — who was flanked by his Transition Economic Advisory Board and who spoke at a podium to which was affixed a sign with a small presidential seal and the words “The Office of the President Elect” — said the government must work quickly to deal with economic crisis, but he emphasized, as he has throughout the campaign, that there is one president at a time.

Patt Morrison: All Votes are Final — Campaign Couture? Not So Much

The McCain-Palin ticket promised to do something to boost the economy, and even thought it lost, it kinda sorta did.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the luxury store Neiman Marcus got whomped with a 26.8% decline in sales from last October. Other chains like Saks and Nordstrom took a big hit, too. And the month before, in September, Neiman Marcus’ sales figures were down by 11% from a year earlier.

Imagine how much worse those numbers might have been if it hadn’t been for the shopping sprees reported by the RNC for the Sarah Palin candidacy: $75,062 at Neiman Marcus, $49,425 at Saks, and an afterthought-looking $9,447 at the mid-market Macys.

George stephanopoulos bio

The Times also reported that the RNC may be heading north to Alaska to repossess what it can of the Cinderella wardrobe, but on the campaign trail, Palin herself had already said she regarded them as props: “These clothes–they’re not my property, just like the lighting and the staging and everything else that the RNC purchased. I am not taking them with me.”

What, I wonder, is Neiman’s return policy? Full refund up until thirty days with the tags still on? And after that, just store credit?

But is the store credit good until 2012?

Reporter, photographer want your thoughts on the election

Why did we vote the way we did?

From Obama-McCain down the line, we made our choices Tuesday, and in many cases, before then.

Today, Register Star photographer Amy J. Van Horn and reporter Mike Wiser are talking to residents about how they feel, what they expect, and the day after the election.

Their first stop is the Firehouse Pub in Roscoe, then it’s on to the Rockton Library.

After that, they’ll swing through Loves Park, Machesney Park, Rockford and Cherry Valley, stopping each step of the way to find out what people are thinking.

Come back to rrstar.com for updates.
