In Minnesota’s Senate race, Norm Coleman had a lead of 215 votes out of almost 2.9 million votes cast. That translates to a lead of less than 0.01%. Yesterday was the first day of a recount which is mandatory under state law. The criterion for counting a ballot is whether the voter made their intent clear. Yesterday, Al Franken gained 41 votes on Norm Coleman, reducing his margin to 174 votes after 18% of the votes were recounted. Both candidates are losing votes right now because of challenges. If either campaign challenges a ballot, it is removed from the tally of Coleman, Franken, or other and set aside for the State Canvassing Board to resolve in mid-December. It will be up to them to determine the fate of the lizard people ballot and about 1,500 other assorted oddities.

Yesterday, 20 of Minnesota’s 87 counties completed their recounts. 25 more counties will be starting today and most of those have few enough votes so they will complete their recounts by the end of the day. Several counties won’t even start until early December. The main action is still in the big counties: Hennepin (Minneapolis, 11% recounted), Ramsey (St. Paul, 15% recounted), Dakota (suburbs, 13% recounted), Washington (suburbs, 34% recounted), and St. Louis (Duluth, 22% recounted). I saw this last week and didn’t get a chance to make the clip, but Bay Buchanan was on CNN and told us how the right wing will bring bipartisanship to the table as Obama takes office.

BUCHANAN: Well, it all depends on which direction the country — Obama wants to take the country. If he is really going to govern from the center and recognizes that the nation is center to right, then we’re gonna work with him, just as we worked with Bill Clinton to get welfare reform…

Obama won a clear mandate to lead this country the way he sees fit and America wants to get things done. So this statement by Buchanan, and dozens of other conservative talking heads like her in the days since the election, is very dangerous for the Right. If they are perceived as obstructionists during this time of heavy economic crisis then their brand of politics will be damaged all the more.

Personally, I hope they do it. They helped make the case for Obama with their constant personal attacks as well as calling him a “Socialist” and a “Marxist.” Keep up the good work, guys and gals. You are making my job so much easier. As for the talking point that America is a center-right country, Media Matters has more.

Several in the media have claimed that President-elect Barack Obama won the election because he ran as a conservative and that notwithstanding Obama’s victory, the United States is a conservative country.

In claiming that Obama ran as a conservative, these media figures ignore the central components of his platform, including repeal of tax cuts for the wealthy, near-universal health-care coverage, and redeployment of troops from Iraq to Afghanistan.

Alex Crowley summed up the feelings of his teammates with one word.

“Finally,” the Notre Dame boys soccer player said, followed by a pause. “It’s been a long wait.”

ND tacked on a second goal with less than five minutes left Tuesday night and defeated Oswego 2-0 to win the Class 2A Morton Supersectional one year after losing a one-goal lead in the last 23 seconds of a supersectional.

The victory sends the Irish (19-3-1) to the state finals for the first time since they claimed the 2004 Class A state championship, when this group of seniors were in eighth grade.

“It feels great,” said ND senior defender Matt Barkley, who assisted both goals. “We didn’t want to be the only class that didn’t make it (to state) in (15) years. We always want to leave our legacy, never want to be the team that let down the program.”

ND plays at 1 p.m. Friday against Westchester St. Joseph (16-6-2) in the 2A semifinals at North Central College in Naperville. St. Joseph, which defeated Midlothian Bremen 2-0 to win the Lisle Supersectional, also last advanced to state in 2004, when it finished fourth in Class A. The winner Friday plays at 11 a.m. Saturday for the title. The loser plays at 9 a.m. for third place.

“The monkey is off our back,” ND coach Mike Bare said. “At this point, I think you’ll see a different team on Friday, a relaxed team.”

ND scored both of its goals off long restarts by Barkley, who has 10 assists on the season. In the 27th minute off a drawn-up play, Barkley found senior midfielder Brogan O’Brien moving left to right along the 18-yard line to open space.

O’Brien turned and squeezed through two defenders to get into the penalty area and ripped a shot off the far back post at 26:23 for his 13th of the season.

“We had been working on that in practice since regionals,” O’Brien said. “Matt gave me a great ball, and coach gives me the freedom to use my feet to get into the box.”

ND led 1-0 for the next 50 minutes, until sophomore Vince Cicciarelli scored his 19th of the season.

As time dwindled with the one-goal lead, some ND players and coaches had thoughts of last season’s supersectional loss. Champaign Centennial equalized with 23 seconds left and won in overtime.

“Without a doubt, I was,” Bare said. “I’m watching the clock go down, them get set peices at midfield, and (Oswego junior Sean Totsch) can put a ball into the box. One unlucky bounce and change of momentum, here we come.”

Cicciarelli’s goal settled those uneasy feelings. After collecting Barkley’s long service to the right side of the penalty area, Cicciarelli blasted a shot past Oswego reserve keeper Alex Fischer, who replaced senior Ryan Miller to allow the starter to play in the midfield.

ND’s defense extended its shutout streak to eight games and 675 minutes by limiting Totsch’s touches. The speedy, talented Oswego midfielder had 22 goals this season.

“A sign of a good team is they take you out of what you want to do,” Oswego coach Travis Carlisle said, “and they took us out of what we wanted to do in the first 30-35 minutes. “We hadn’t seen a team of that skill since the Naperville Central and Geneva games.”

Totsch and Oswego’s forwards pressured ND’s back line and forced the Irish defenders to make quick decisions. Still, Oswego (15-9-1) managed only four shots on goal.

“They had us scouted,” Totsch said. “We had no idea what to expect coming into this game. We didn’t know any teams that had played them.”
