The McCain-Kissinger Flip Flop

Did McCain just change his position on Iran?

John McCain and Barack Obama got into an argument tonight over Henry Kissinger’s position on Iran. During the debate McCain said Obama’s position was not the same as Kissinger’s. McCain said that Kissinger “said that there could be secretary-level and lower level meetings. I’ve always encouraged them.” This is a correct characterization of Kissinger’s position. And you could say that this represents a slight difference between Barack Obama and Henry Kissinger. But McCain saying that “he has always” encouraged talks with Iran just isn’t true. McCain has never supported talks with Iran at the Secretary of State level. So either McCain has massively shifted positions on Iran or he is completely misrepresenting his position on Iran.

This is McCain’s position:

And the belief that somehow communications and positions and willingness to sit down and have serious negotiations need to be done in a face to face fashion as Senator Obama wants to do, which then enhances the prestige of a nation that’s a sponsor of terrorists and is directly responsible for the deaths of brave young Americans, I think is an unacceptable position…

Kissinger:

Well, I am in favor of negotiating with Iran. And one utility of negotiation is to put before Iran our vision of a Middle East, of a stable Middle East, and our notion on nuclear proliferation at a high enough level so that they have to study it. And, therefore, I actually have preferred doing it at the secretary of state level so that we — we know we’re dealing with authentic…” Sesno: “Put at a very high level right out of the box?” Kissinger: “Initially, yes. And I always believed that the best way to begin a negotiation is to tell the other side exactly what you have in mind and what you are — what the outcome is that you’re trying to achieve so that they have something that they can react to. Now, the permanent members of the Security Council, plus Japan and Germany, have all said nuclear weapons in Iran are unacceptable. They’ve never explained what they mean by this. So if we go into a negotiation, we ought to have a clear understanding of what is it we’re trying to prevent. What is it going to do if we can’t achieve what we’re talking about? But I do not believe that we can make conditions for the opening of negotiations. We ought, however, to be very clear about the content of negotiations and work it out with other countries and with our own government.” (CNN’s “Live Event,” 9/20/08)

The fact is that McCain has never said he was willing to talk to Iran at the Secretary of State level. His statement tonight either represents a massive policy shift or represents a massive misrepresentation of McCain’s position.

Bush to speak on bail-out debate

Posted on September 24, 2008

US President George W Bush is due to address the nation shortly, amid more wrangling in Congress over a $700bn (?378bn) bail-out of financial markets.

He will call for support for the rescue plan, which is dominating US politics.

Presidential rivals Barack Obama and John McCain have disagreed on delaying a TV debate over the economic turmoil.

Mr McCain says he is suspending his campaign to help with the crisis, but Mr Obama says voters now need to hear from the candidates more than ever.

Mr Bush will make his televised address at 2100 EDT (0100 GMT).

His administration is calling on Congress to approve the costly bail-out - under which the Treasury would use public money to buy bad debt from troubled financial institutions - as soon as possible to prevent further harm to the economy.

But lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican parties have voiced doubts about the plan and the speed at which they are being asked to approve it.

They want assurances that it will benefit ordinary American home-owners as well as Wall Street, and be subject to adequate oversight.

Debate row

Both of the candidates in November’s presidential election have been speaking out on the issue.

Carolyn pollack

Mr McCain, the Republican candidate, said he was suspending his campaign to return to Washington to help agree a deal, saying he feared the rescue package would not pass “as it currently stands”.

He also called for his first presidential debate with Democratic candidate Barack Obama on Friday to be suspended - something Mr Obama did not support.

Americans needed to “hear from the person who in approximately 40 days will be responsible for dealing with this mess”, Mr Obama told journalists.

Both candidates have, however, called for a bipartisan approach to passing a bail-out deal.

Earlier in the day US Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke said the US economy risked “serious consequences” if swift action was not taken.

Parents: Monkey business afoot at school playground

0916_FRHN_NW_playground

Part of the Joseph G. Luther Elementary School playground has been off limits for students for at least four months and parents are angry for what they feel is a lack of action on the School Department’s part. A number of parents gathered at a recent School Committee meeting to find out why wood chips were removed from the jungle gym and monkey bar areas, parts of the playground that are now inaccessible to students. Superintendent Stephan Flanagan said “parental concerns” about the wood chips led to their removal last spring. But there was rough terrain under the mulch, he said, which resulted in closing the playground until a suitable replacement could be found. “We’re looking into pea stones,” said Flanagan, though there were some concerns that the stone, which is currently used at the Hoyle School, could be tracked into the school and damage the floor. “There’s a fine line between using what was there and putting something new there,” said Flanagan. Principal Christine Panarese, who said she has fielded a number of complaints from parents, said she is helping to raise  funds for a new filler. “We’re just trying to keep the kids safe here. We’ve tripled the supervision out there from two teachers to six to make sure everyone is safe,” said Panarese. “I’m hoping to call around for sponsors. I’m willing to use my principal’s fund, which has $800 in it, toward this,” said Panarese, “It should be a minimal fix.” Rough estimates showed the pea stones could cost anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000. Greg Duquette, who has a third grader at the school, said many parents don’t even know why the playground is closed. The parents that do, he said, are mad because they feel nothing has happened to solve the problem. “They’ve had four months to do something but they haven’t done anything,” he said Luther parents, many of whom did not want to go on the record, echoed Duquette’s frustration. They said their children are only allowed to use the swing set area of the playground now, but have also been informed that the swing set is also in need of repairs. Flanagan had no time frame for the arrival of the playground material. “We take the safety of the children seriously and it’s a service that has to be done based on regulations and safety,” said Flanagan, who said at a recent meeting that the money would have to be raised through fund-raising. “They’ve had more than four months to fix this so why hasn’t it (gotten) done? This is for the benefit of the kids, it’s not life and death, and I’m tired of the politics going on around this,” said Duquette. “How do you remove the mulch if you have no plan to fix it? Whatever reason it was removed, it should have been corrected long ago. I just want the problem solved.”E-mail Jay Pateakos at jpateakos@heraldnews.com.

Can a Pizza Box Save the Planet?

yoda%20pizza.jpg

pizza. from it’s humble beginnings in italy, it has become a sustenance enjoyed across the world. and though the size, move, and flavor may alternate generally, one task does not. the box. a enduring utilitarian container, it does a advantage hassle keeping the pizza warm, safe, and easy to gain. billions are used each year. and they’re slacking on the trade.

Depending on the pizza, having a plate to set it on is a necessity. want to store what you don’t eat? Good luck, that bulky box often requires you to muscle other things out of the way to make room. What if the box could double as a plate? And triple as a compact post meal storage container? It can, using the same ol’ box, remixed. It’s called the Green Box.

green%20pizza%20box.jpg

it’s simple in the final analysis: fit in the standard hem in, perforate the vertex into quarters, and they can turn into plates. perforate the edges of the bottom of the strike, then once down the middle, and you can fold that into a leftover box that’s half the size of the original. less than that, actually, since the box is squeeze shaped.

So, you’ve made pizza eating easier, and for some, that’s all they need to know. A boon to both pizza shop owners and customers. But the impact beyond that could be huge. How? Think about all the other things that would have been used with a normal box: Plates plus the time/water/detergent used washing them. Disposable plates if you’re out, likely tossed. Paper towels standing in for plates. Plastic wrap or foil used to cover or wrap the leftovers in a smaller package then that mammoth box.

Nostradamus predictions

This may not sound like a lot in terms of one meal, but think for a moment how many pizzas are consumed every day, all over the world. 4.8 billion annually in the US alone. Taking out everything but the box out of that equation, and making it out of recycled paper while you’re at it, is a huge score.

And on a broader level, I see this as having the potential to reach a broader population, if the box has green messaging on it, and further suggestions for people to do to lighten their impact on the planet, and let’s face it, look cooler to their friends. For some, this may be their first interaction with a greener product, and for the first time, it has relevance to their lives.

E.C.O. Incorporated, the New York based makers of the Green Box, have made a wise move - They could have gone dark green, making it out of agricultural waste based paper, etc etc, appealing to greenest among us. But that would have likely raised the price, and for most pizza shops, a quantity focused industry, that would be a deal breaker. Instead, they took the industry standard box, modified nothing but how it’s cut, and made it out of recycled paper, an increasingly cost competitive option.

Why wouldn’t a pizza shop do this? They’ll have taken a step to be greener, their customers will have a better experience and they too can do their part, and they have a story to tell friends. Pizza Fusion, are you listening?

Readers: What other simple solutions have you seen out there to reduce waste, or eliminate it altogether? Any innovations in green packaging we should know about?
